about stages

Stages School of Dance was formed in 1984 with half a dozen pupils at the local YMCA.

Viv Greener the founder and principal teacher gradually increased this number through hard work and dedication to what it is today.

Viv continued her own training over the years to keep up to date with all the current trends, particularly in the modern stage and freestyle genres.
She has seen some of her past students mature into professional dancers, teachers and some who have gone into other fields of work, some involved with the theatre and some not.

Viv is still very much a big part of her dance school and teaches most of the classes.

A few of her senior students have progressed onto the teaching side through Viv’s training and help take regular classes.

Viv has two children herself and though for many years she worked in industry as well as running her dancing school, she now devotes her time to running the school full time.

Through Viv’s past experience and personality she has learnt that the best way to train/teach her students is with a more laid back approach. Classes are disciplined but informal and students are trained to the highest standard but are not indoctrinated with fear. With this approach Viv has an excellent rapport with her students and have many testimonies to the high standard, which is produced in a fun atmosphere.

When Viv first qualified she was a member of The British Dance Association, but on the advice of her Dancing Teacher moved to another society called ‘The North British Dance Organisation’. After a while Viv felt the need for recognition by the Stage Dance Council and a more competitive syllabus, so after looking into the various dance societies in the country, decided upon the NCDTA.

Viv taught for many years at the Whitley Bay YMCA until an old dance studio came up for sale in North Shields. It was an ideal property as it already had Canadian Maple Sprung Flooring and large airy rooms. Viv moved most of her classes there in September 2002 after extensive renovations had been carried out, and with the opening of the third studio in the building all classes are now conducted here.
